How to set color of window control buttons when using oomox?

When using oomox to create a custom gtk theme, the icon colors in metacity-1/assets are ignored and are grayed out in all event variants whenever used. For example: the close button should be red, but it is grey. Wednesday: MATE. GTK version: 3.28
