How to sell Open Source CMS?

There is a desire to create your own CMS. I know that a bicycle, etc., is not the issue. There is also a desire to earn some money on it.
The first thing I thought about was how to protect CMS from copying. I think it makes no sense to obfuscate the code, because it should be possible to finish the CMS. I also don’t want to make it closed, in my opinion, having an open code, you can improve its quality many times over.
Ok, posted the code on github. What's next? Is there any way to legally protect it? If so, how? Somehow Magento manages to do this.
Before asking a question, read similar questions. Everywhere they write "support, SaaS", etc. Well, ok, how can you limit the "pirates":

  • No updates
  • Inability to install themes, plugins, modules from the store
  • The absence of those support

Are there any other options?

No one will buy CMS in PHP if there are popular open and free counterparts. and there is no need to talk about Bitrix, there is a completely different business model, the client pays not for the CMS as such, but for a ready-made solution for the site (plus aggressive marketing plays a huge role). An individual developer should not even look in the direction of such Bitrixes.
You can earn on your own CMS by selling your support services. But before that, you first need to make the CMS popular. Any attempts to close the code (even partial), as well as any restrictions in the license, completely contradict the task of popularizing the product.

at the expense of the community, you can hone the Open Source CMS and earn on individual business solutions, such as a catalog component, or some kind of CRM running on your CMS. Earn not only on sales but also on support.

That is, the author wants people to participate in open source development and this brings him profit. Hmm, original.
