How to select layers in groups in photoshop?

Hello. I have been suffering with this problem for a long time. When I hover over the object I need, then press 'Ctrl' and click on this object, then this object in the list of layers will become active for me. But if the object I need is in a group, then when you click on the object via 'ctrl', it is not the object that becomes active, but the group in which my object is located. How to make an object become active, not a group?
Active - selected, used. That is the one I'm currently working with.
