Lately, nothing new and cardinal has been invented. It all depends on what you want to protect - an idea? the code?
I must say right away that the available methods are not effective enough, otherwise there would not be so many duplicate applications.
You can try to protect the idea with a patent for an invention (20 years), by describing the functionality of the application. Many patent attorneys can register just about any application this way. But the pleasure is expensive and slow.
And the code is protected as a literary work, there is little sense from such protection.
