Within the framework of hardware, scalability is access to a "wider" market.
If the demand for your device is limited by crowdfunding sites, where half of the orders are "oh, I don't need it, but it's cool" - I have bad news for you.
Investors, in your case, will be interested in how much money-time you need to occupy a full-fledged niche in the market.
First, they want to understand that you can "survive" in the crowdfunding platform. Then - in the local (regional) market. Then - in the international.
Each of these steps is just scaling, involves different production volumes, different sales volumes and audiences, and different ways of promoting / capturing the audience.
So, an investor is not interested in a project that gets stuck on crowdfunding, and you need to prove that after a successful run-in on crowdfunding, you will be able to enter a full-fledged market.
