How to save files when renting a virtual PC?

For the needs of development related to games, I want to rent a PC/node on a low/medium power server (i3, 8GB RAM, GTX670+).
How to protect yourself from data theft on such services?
Let me know if you use it.

No way.
You do not have any means, not only influence, but even control over the hosting administration, therefore, you cannot do anything so that your file is not stolen. Regardless of whether someone needs your data or not - you can always just take the word of the owners of the service (which does not mean at all that they will keep it - a free service - it is not free at all). And this applies not only to hosting - but to any service - you are not able to check it, which means:
a) score
b) do not use
c) do not use for data of interest that you encrypt etc.
