It is not necessary to install Gnome, but the basic Ubuntu, in which Gnome Shell is the default, and not the heavyweight Gnome.
Gnome and Gnome Shell are completely different DE!
Those. install:
sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop
And then select the Ubuntu session.
But the curator knows better ...

Install GNOME and in the login screen choose "UNITY Shell" or whatever it's called now.
