How to run new software on old distro?

Good afternoon!
I really want to start a normal desktop Linux, and I already found such a distro. Linux Mint 9!
After installation, there was no support for the hardware of my ultrabook, and I had to update the kernel to 3.16.
But in such a bundle, installing something that is not from the old Package Manager is simply unrealistic.
First of all, they are interested in all sorts of graphic programs (in the sense of interacting with the graphic system), for example, text editors, etc.
Actually, how to install new software in the old distribution?
Even the browser that crashes when visiting any more or less html5 site,
I can’t update (Chromium 25.0.1364.160)
Options that I see:
1. Install virtualbox and run in it. (but I don't really want to)
2. Run software in a chroot environment, but how will it interact with x-window ?
3. Switch to a new distribution. I've already tried a lot. But even I can’t get rid of mint isadora.
4. Your option?

It will work great. Sound will work too. If the card is Nvidia, then running 3d is not a problem either. My situation is the opposite - I need an old 32-bit debian to work. I run everything from chroot. The schroot utility makes this easier.

Usually they put a virtual machine when you need to turn back time or, conversely, go to the "future".
In addition, the main OS should always be kept up to date with the latest updates, otherwise the risks of catching something increase.
