How to protect yourself from DDOS?

The essence of the question is this. There is a site that is on VDS, the domain is linked to cloudflare, and the IP of the site itself is indicated in it. So far everything is working, but there was a need to raise a script with Socket.Io on this VDS NodeJs. To connect from the site to the nodejs+socket.io script, you need to specify the IP address of the VDS. But I'm afraid to do this because they can put it down. I did it under the domain on cloudflare, but in this case, socket.io does not work. Any ideas?

nothing on the free version
if you are a small service, then why should you be afraid of ddos,
well, if you are completely afraid of direct attacks, set up a proxy on a cheap WDS.
