How to run Linux on Macbook?

Good day to all. There was a need to run Ubuntu installed on an external SSD on a Macbook computer, but ran into some problems. Launched the disk on reboot and pressed the Alt key. Attached is a photo of the startup issue. In this regard, the question arose: how to run Linux on a MacBook? If anyone has any information, please share, I would greatly appreciate it.
I also heard about the rEFIt software, but its installation does not help, or I'm doing something wrong.

Throw the disk into a virtual machine (VirtualBox for example) and run it.

In general, Apple banned the installation of Linux on all new Macs.
But, if you really need it, there is an antediluvian rEFInd (this is a continuation of rEFIt, but I have never worked with it and it seems to me that on the latest OS (Catalina, Mojave) the apple will put sticks into ubuntu installation wheels.
But, why do we need Linux, if macos is *nix-like. There is almost no difference at the level of an ordinary developer. The same functions. The same bash / zsh, the same git out of the box, for ubuntu - apt-get, for macOS - homebrew, the same folder structure. If
you still really want, or need a server for ubuntu, then you need VirtualBox for virtual machines and Vagrant for the environment
