How to restore audio to mp4?

There is no audio on the mp4 recording, although the owner claims that there is. Tried VLC, MediPlayer, as well as their own player, supposedly should work. However, no.
So the question arose, how to first check if there is an audio track there, and how to restore it if it is damaged or something else?
