Ladders will not be (noticeably) only on the retina display. On a regular HD display, the pixel is too large, so the ladder is visible. It will be on the retina too, just too small to be visible to the naked eye.
If you change the preview from CPU to GPU, then the video card will try to remove the ladder due to anti-aliasing, but it will still be visible.
In general, to remove the ladder, you do not need to make such long thickness transitions.
