How to remove everything unnecessary from startup on a Debian/Raspbian system?

I want to speed up the system boot process on Rasberry as much as possible. How do I remove anything I don't need on a Raspbian/Debian system?

do ps xa and see what's running
run aptitude and carefully select what you don't need and delete.
