How to regain control of bash after ssh break?

I connected via ssh, launched a very long wget, then ssh fell off, and after reconnect, a new interpreter is created, and I only see ps that wget is running. I would like to see the download progress. How to return control to the old interpreter?

get in the habit of doing "long" operations under "screen" ... and that's it .... or "nohup"
