How to reduce lag when using Ubuntu on a usb stick?
It is clear that it should slow down for reading / writing, but when working in the browser, pauses are delayed for more than 30 seconds and their frequency is quite frequent.
What to twist? After all, if it is possible to work from a flash drive, then you can somehow optimize it?

I solved this problem by buying a tiny M.2 SATA SSD and a USB to USB adapter.
Works just as fast as from an internal SSD, and much faster than from an HDD.
Firstly, usb 2.0 is the brakes. Preferably 3.0. And the flash drive is fast for writing / reading.
Secondly, it is desirable to have a lot of RAM on the computer, then in addition to not being swapped,
another part of the RAM can be allocated to mount a temporary file system.
1. be prepared that the flash drive will die quickly enough with prolonged use of the OS on it. My experience speaks of several months.
2. help.ubuntu.ru/wiki/ubuntu_%D0%BD%D0%B0_usb - optimization methods are listed there.
PS advice about hdd / ssd - very reasonable .....
If the question is about the browser and you have a fairly wide channel for connecting to the Internet, I would advise you to completely disable the disk cache in the browser settings. This will significantly reduce the load on the drive during operation.
