How to raise the bridge inside the OpenVZ container?

There is a node on proxmox (Debian). OpenVZ containers are deployed and running on the node, the network is configured using veth.
If you do brctl addbr br0 on the node, it will work fine.
If you do the same in the container, brctl will swear with the phrase "Invalid argument", without saying anything either in dmesg or in syslog.
Google on the topic tells how to raise bridges from a node to a container, which is a bit different.
Has anyone come across a detailed problem? Is it even possible?

It is not very clear why it is needed in the openvz container at all?
