You sign an agreement, an auditor is assigned to you, he comes and says - here is the list, if you have any questions - ask. Then you ask him if it is possible to do this and that, and he says it is possible or not and explains why. Then, when you say you're ready to be tested, he does a pre-audit, trying to break into the system from both the outside and inside perimeters. After passing the preliminary, pass the real audit.
