How to put Hotkey on power lock applet in Gnome2?

There is a laptop on which Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx has been successfully living for a long time.
Gnome2 is used as a GUI.
Gnome's applets include an excellent power management blocking applet, which essentially ensures that when it is activated, it does not allow you to turn off the backlight of the screen / or the screen itself during a long idle time, does not reduce brightness when idle, and does not take away laptop in a wonderful world of dreams in sleep mode.
But sometimes you need to turn it off (when running on battery power) so as not to interfere with work.
He has two modes, on or off, he successfully hangs himself on the panel. But there is a desire to control its work not with a mouse click, but with a keyboard shortcut. But I can’t find anywhere either a service that manages only it, or just a process (kill / start).
Tell me how you can hang a hotkey on it, or maybe there is an alternative utility (not Gnomovsky), with the possibility of hanging a hotkey on it?

It's called gnome-inhibit-applet. It must be managed apparently through D-Bus.
There is a python script, but with a stupid copy-paste it did not give any results. Maybe it needs to be tweaked a bit.
Well, then we hang the script on the desired hotkey through “System -> Options → Keyboard shortcuts”

There is a sense, the increase in memory will be noticeable, it will affect the performance in heavy applications.
In the store you need SODIMM DDR-III with a frequency of 1066 MHz:

Buy also an SSD drive right away. :-)

There will be meaning. Also pay attention to the memory frequency.
But keep in mind that not all operating systems support this amount of memory.

SSD will be more noticeable in terms of performance changes. Especially for a laptop.
Roughly speaking, after adding RAM, applications will run the same amount of time, but there will be less brakes when the brakes are running - but this is if you use something heavy (photoshop, IDE, etc.). After moving from 4 to 8 GB, the difference will not be as noticeable as from transferring programs and OS to SSD.
After transferring the system to an SSD, all programs will start to run faster (almost instantly). Windows will start faster (if you have win). The speed of the laptop will increase very noticeably.
I'm all for getting an SSD first. Now they give a guarantee for more than 2-3 years, and if it breaks during this time, then it will be possible to simply replace it with a new one under warranty.
SSD can be put instead of DVD, then it will be possible to store important things on the HDD, and what is not critical - the OS itself and programs on the SSD, because. There are times when SSDs break, although this is rare.
From SSD manufacturers, I recommend Intel or Samsung.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation.
Please tell me one more thing. What SSD do you recommend? And when installing an SSD instead of a DVD, do you need to buy something else, maybe some special SSD? And what is needed for this? Well, except for the SSD itself, of course :)

There are three largest manufacturers of RAM chips, these are Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix, RAMs with these chips have been working for years without problems
. problems they work but not on all motherboards and are less stable if the RAM chips are closed by a radiator and you cannot find out on which chips the module is made to buy such RAM is always a risk
well, of course, look at the characteristics of the supply voltage, timings, frequency of operation the frequency of operation should be supported your motherboard if you install different modules, see that they have the same characteristics
