How to punish a customer who has not paid for a website?

A site was developed for the customer without any contracts (on parole). After that, it was uploaded to its hosting, after which, by agreement, payment of the remaining 50% for the work done should have occurred. But the customer began to play for time with the payment, and later even get in touch.
Now I think how it is better to punish an unscrupulous customer. There was a working ftp access, but it makes no sense to demolish something just like that, because. he has backups that will be restored, and my ftp access is denied. Thinking about some sophisticated backdoors. Any other ideas?

Just take it as a lesson for the future. On a word of honor, they work only with old, many times proven customers. It hardly makes sense to waste time inventing ways of revenge, it's better to learn something new or go for a walk :)

There is still a variant of sophisticated revenge, to introduce a backdoor like $a($b) into several places of the code, and wait a month until the backups become backdoored, and then raise his website on your server, and put it on all 301 redirects, website register your own in Yandex master, and Google master, and on its server in a couple of months you can delete everything, and you are the owner of the traffic)

I had a similar situation,
I changed the main page of his site, to something like "The client did not pay for the development of the site, the site is turned off", the client restored it from backup several times, I again replaced the main one)) as a result, he immediately paid, and In addition to money, I learned a valuable lesson!

Once I came across such a customer. My site was used, the customer bragged about it, and instead of paying, I also received negative reviews with fictitious problems.
As a result, I ordered "promotion of the site by running through catalogs" from a schoolboy. 10 bucks and the domain is banned forever.

Just forgive. Let it remain on his conscience. What a man sows, that he will reap. This time he deceived you, next time he will be deceived. And you, having made the right choice, will be rewarded in full.

1. From under the working network (where the customer comes from) everything is OK, the site works as it should.
2. All other people receive a slightly different website, a different number in the phone number, and a different number in the mail.
or
3. if the site is popular, sell places for links on it
, or
4. an imaginary page with bad content and to Roskomnadzor (before that, leaving the backdoor there)
or
5. backdoor now, and start doing all this in a year, when they will depend from the site is strong, but the backups will still be with your backdoor.

Transfer the database to a third-party server. And when enough records accumulate, just turn it off :)

Reputation is more valuable.
Future customers will not pick out who is right and who is wrong. If there is any fact of suspicion of your dishonesty, then this is automatically a minus for you.
Do not punish, but dump.
And as soon as possible.

keep in mind that without a contract (although with a contract too), you, by performing any actions with his site, violate the law, which a negligent customer can take advantage of.
because:
1. as said above, try through copyright protection - the only legal way.
2. either neatly and imperceptibly - now a backdoor, some actions (secret, anonymous, see above.) in a few weeks, months.
3. either score and enter yourself + for acquiring new experience, how not to negotiate.

And in general, yes, copyright. using something not bought, even without a contract, he violates them

There was such a situation a couple of years ago, only there was work - a burning engineering project. I wrote a couple of reviews on the forums (everything was as it was: “I was ordered - I did it - they didn’t pay”) and indicated my full name, name, address .... a month later the issue was resolved at the initiative of the customer.

If the site is gaining popularity, then you can gradually merge the information.
And then make a mailing list to clients, that's it...
The right advice was given to make a backdoor, wait until it enters backups and do dirty tricks.
But in order to return the money, you need to think about every action. Although the probability is low.
