How to pull the layout on Joomla?

How to put ready layout on Joomla? I know that you need to somehow register the positions in order for it all to work, but I don’t know how it’s all done, and I suspect that the positions are far from everything =) In general, I ask for specific examples, books or articles, or some excerpts , examples on the code itself, tutorials are different. Write how you learned this, I think there is something to advise. I have already read the general words, there is not enough sense, but I want to understand. These are the pies.
