How to protect yourself when working with freelance programmers?

Good day, there is an online store (on opencart), now it needs to be edited, we decided to take the programmer from freelance.
Question: are there any schemes for working with a programmer, so that he would not pull away a unique template and the site as a whole?

Elusive Joe is a character of the once widespread onigdot, allegorically denoting something that is known or widespread at the level of legend, but in fact, no one needs to yuh.
Anecdote A small
town in the Western American steppe. Saloon. Two cowboys, a local and a visitor, are sitting at the table, drinking whiskey. Suddenly, someone rushes down the street at great speed, firing in all directions from revolvers. In the saloon, no one leads with their ears. Visiting local:
— Bill?
"Yes, Harry?"
What was it, Bill?
“It was Elusive Joe, Harry.
“Why is he called Elusive Joe, Bill?”
“Because no one has caught him yet, Harry.
"Why hasn't anyone caught him yet, Bill?"
"Because nobody cares about him, Harry."

Programmers don't give up on stealing your site. The design rubs off easily. Base ... except for soapboxes for spam, and even that is unlikely. Unless, of course, you store customer card data (which is prohibited by security policy). If a programmer wanted his own online store, he would have made it for himself long ago without yours. And before making significant changes, a normal programmer is simply obliged to steal your entire site with all the giblets, only this is called a backup, and in most cases it just lies somewhere on the screw. Just look at the portfolio, reviews, be interested in the experience to implement the changes you require.

What does it mean that he did not drag the site as a whole?
1. Website on a free and popular engine. Therefore, the site is far from unique. And there are millions of such sites.
2. The design can be pulled off anytime, anywhere. You don't even need access. It is enough to turn on the web inspector and open the site. Delov then for 20-30 minutes
And answering the question: No, alas, in nature to this moment there is no such scheme.

>How to protect yourself when working with freelance programmers?
1) Do not hand feed.
2) Do not make sudden movements, so as not to frighten the creature.
3) Never open the cage.

Damn, how naive you all are. By and large, your "unique design" is not worth much special value. Go to any American site that is over 10 years old. Most of them don't have all these newfangled things of yours, and they don't look very good, but there are a lot more people there than on yours. The main thing on the site is not the design, but the content
