How to protect yourself from DoS attacks?

I need hosting for a client (Ukraine), I asked if I could find reviews about dos attacks everywhere. I am not an expert in this matter, but is there any way to protect myself from them? after all, there were no attacks on such social networks as vk or facebook dos, at least I have not heard. What determines the success of protection against dos attacks? otherwise, at a loss, the site should always work, rarely let there be failures, yes, but not in a day

@BeriaFantom

1. Several servers in different data centers.
2. LoadBalancer
3. Rotation of DNS addresses.
And you will be less afraid of DOS. But it will be expensive.

@opium

Well, you said that VK and Facebook have traffic of tens of gigabits, you can say they are always DDoSed.

I am an amateur in this, but still I saw how someone did some kind of check before loading the site with the inscription "protection from DDos" which lasted 7 seconds.
But will some logger that logs the frequency of requests from such and such an IP help?
Limit requests per second by IP-Region-Screen Size?
General restriction of requests to come back later?
Autobahn IP with too frequent requests and at the server level, so that he was basically denied access to the address
But again - ddos is just an appeal. In any case, an action will be performed, and if there are many many many many of these calls, then actions even to display the message "sorry, the limit has been reached" can also hang everyone)))
