How to protect your application and its code?

I mean the legal side.
I know it might sound funny, but I'd like to know.
How can I legally protect my code (not open source of course) and software product from being copied and used without my permission?

In Russia, there is a protection of the code from unauthorized use in their developments by obtaining a copyright certificate.
It just doesn't make any sense. Refactored, renamed variables - and from the point of view of the law, this is a completely different code.
