How to properly stop an additional HDD on a laptop?

Hello! I put an additional hard drive on the laptop, instead of DVD-Roma (with the help of optibay).
Interested in such a question, how is it better, if desired (when running on battery for example), to disable the hard software programmatically so as not to drain the battery? Maybe there is some kind of software, or standard means of Windows 7?
Thank you!

SyavaSyava Good recommendation. However, one must take into account how often it is planned to access the hard drive when working from the battery. The starting currents of the railway are significantly higher than the operating ones. If extremely rare circulation is planned, then the railway should be euthanized. If the calls are frequent enough, then it is necessary to do a comparative operation and see when the operating time from the battery will be longer.
