How to properly set up VMware with Ubuntu Server for PHP development?

Good day to all.
- I have a Windows 7 laptop at home and a WiFi router with DHCP enabled for 50 addresses.
- I want to put VMware Workstation or VirtualBox on the laptop (with access via bridge), and inside something like Ubuntu Server 14 (for PHP development, via PuTTY, Webmin).
- I do not want to connect a laptop via Ethernet, since it is not close to the router and the home will stumble over the cable.
- Or like this: connect the cable for an hour or two, install and configure everything, then pull out the cable and continue to work only via WiFi.
Is this possible in principle?

You can generally only work with WiFi, it's like nothing to do with it.
If you have a Windows host system, I also recommend setting up host-only adapters and samba, since shared folders in the same virtualbox are wildly slow and buggy periodically with frequent changes.

Yes, it's possible.
1) In the connection settings, check the VmWare bridge checkbox on WiFi and Ethernet adapters.
2) Install Ubuntu and OpenSSH
3) On the router, assign such and such an IP for such and such a poppy (or register statics)
4) Profit .....

Bridging over Wi-Fi does not work for everyone on VMware Workstation. What it depends on is not clear.
I recommend you 1) try VirtualBox; 2) if you really want WiFi, borrow a usb-wifi adapter from someone and try to forward it as a usb device to the virtual machine.

Why do you need Workstation? Download VMware Player. Ubuntu is installed in it in 15 minutes (for convenience, select the OpenSSH Server package. Then, with a couple of commands, you stumble php, apache (nginx) and maria (mysql is no longer a cake).
