How to properly set up an alternative window manager in OS Debian?

The one that is just awful, I'm thinking about i3wm, at least as a second alternative, let it stand. What I've done? I installed i3wm from the repository myself, but how can I enable it now? If I start x from tty1 with the startx command, then i3wm doesn't start so easily, where should I write it or where should I correct it?

If my sclerosis does not change, then wm needs to be written $(HOME)/.xinitrc
Create such a file and write the command to launch the desired WM there.
