How to properly set up a video player in Linux?

I have a fairly powerful computer: Intel Core i5 4670k; 16 GB; nVidia GTX770; sound Asus Xonar. In Windows 7, any movies up to Full HD 60fps, Full HD 3D are played without problems (MediaPlayerClassic HomeCinema, KMPlayer).
On linux (Debian 8 64bit Stable) I tried a lot of things, the main problems are:
- VLC - quiet sound, even taking into account the ability of VLC to boost up to 200% (normalization and boost in the settings distorts the sound); splitting the video into colored squares after rewinding for 1-2 seconds; rarely video artifacts during playback;
- SMPlayer - quiet sound won and no artifacts after rewinding, but there are problems with video: quite often some lines of the image differ from the rest of the picture for a split second (possibly due to delay). On the gl codec, this unpleasant effect occurs more often, on vdpau - less often, but on vdpau switching to full screen and back occurs through a green screen.
Actually, the question is: how did anyone set up a video player for themselves? Is there any inconvenience when watching high quality videos? What players, codecs, player settings do you use, on what hardware?
I wonder after such problems, how do people advise building media centers on RaspberryPi + Kodi?

Try the mpv player. Never had any problems with formats. Pulls at least 8k video without problems.
