How to properly restore ubuntu?

Situation: recently the drawing of windows in ubunt failed after experimenting with unity, I had to reinstall the axis. But what is the best way to save all the settings and, in which case, restore?

Unity's skin settings are stored in the user's home folder. If the drawing has failed, then:
1. We are looking for an answer on the network. The situation is typical, and reloading the window manager solves the issue.
2. If it doesn't help, you can delete the folders in Homedir that are responsible for the design. I don’t remember exactly which ones, but you can find the answer to this question on the net. The next time you log in, Unity settings will be reset to default.
3. If nothing helps at all, you need to create a new user, switch to it, backup personal files from the old one, then delete it and its home directory. And then create again. This method can be considered extreme, and not reinstalling the system. Linux can run for years with critical bugs caused by installing proprietary drivers or changing hardware. Experimenting with Unity should definitely not be the reason for reinstalling the system.

all user settings are stored in the home directory
, you can mount it on a separate media or partition during system installation (some do this)
even if the system is reinstalled (which, in principle, is not so necessary), the contents of your
/ home / USER_NAME folder can be copied to a new one the system and logically everything should be ok
turn on the display of hidden files in the home folder and you will see a bunch of directories with a dot in front of the name
when the application is installed - it creates a directory for itself there
and as werevolff correctly wrote to you, deleting the application directory and restarting the system, you will get default settings

@cancera

did this:
- reinstalled the axis (/home mounted on /home without formatting), demolished the /.config folder, reinstalled it. My documents are intact. transferred them to Windows and well, fuck it, this ubuntu. if 10 now really shows bash, it will be much more reliable (IMHO). at least - my Windows has not fallen like that in 20 years.
