How to properly enable 404 page?

On all pages of the site, if I go to a non-existent page, it throws a 404, everything is fine.
But there is 1 page site.ru/club/articles/ which behaves very strangely.
If you add site.ru/club/articles/club/ - the page will work (although this does not exist)
If you remove ErrorDocument 404 /404.php in htaccess, then this page crashes with the error
Not Found
The requested URL was not found on this server.
Why does it work and how to fix it?
