How to properly connect a hard drive in macOS?

I have a USB hard drive. But since it is an HDD, it is quite noisy (it is uncomfortable to sleep when it is working). If I extract it (cmd + e and all commands like that), then it stops making noise. How to re-initialize a hard drive in macOS if I removed it, but not from USB?
