How to properly configure your server for external access?
I use Linux Mint 17, I use apache, I work through localhost.
How do I make my sites available to outsiders? As I understand it, you need a dedicated ip, a good provider. Share your experience. Or will everyone advise not to bother and use hosting services?

Better hosting. More stable, easier, cheaper.
If you want to understand the server part, then yes, you need a dedicated address, dns-name and craving for victory for setting up and troubleshooting :)
if you ask such questions, then the best option would be "do not bother and use hosting services"
1. DNS. In order not to bother with the DNS service and zones on your server, use the cloudflare free DNS service. There you can easily create DNS records, bind to your IP and get simple NSs to configure from your ISP.
2. Now you just need to create virtual hosting and register ServerName. It's all. Everything should work.
