How to program on a laptop with an external monitor?

Hello. I have had a 15" laptop for about 2 months now with a normal processor and RAM. I'm programming from a laptop in Python and PHP.
Recently I noticed that I get discomfort from the fact that the screen is too small and I was tempted to buy an external monitor for 24-26" . I have never worked with an external monitor before and I have no idea how it will look like.
I'm used to programming on one monitor, does it mean that I should turn off my native one? or get used to and work on two at once?
Is it convenient to work on two monitors of very different sizes?

The second monitor at the laptop is a salvation for me. It's not even about the diagonal, I would prefer two small monitors to one large one.

Both monitors can work at the same time. Before buying, pay attention to what external connectors for monitors are in the laptop, so as not to miscalculate later
