How to program microcontrollers in Os X?

Hello.
I am just starting to understand the programming of microcontrollers, so far I am only reading articles and choosing books. But I noticed that in these very articles all the described software is only for Windows (or I look crookedly).
In advance, I would like to ask how thorny the path of using Mac / Linux for such tasks?

Although what I was looking for is only suitable for Atmel microcontrollers, you can also find a bunch of others.
iOS takes its roots from *nix systems. Therefore, everything that is suitable for * nix is suitable for iOS.
