How to prevent capistrano from deleting a folder?

I have an uploads folder in my project, which is on the server, and which is in gitignore. So, after each cap deploy, this folder is somehow overwritten on the server, although it is not in the repository.
What could be the problem?

It must be stored separately and then symlinked to the deployed project
