How to permanently indent after paragraph number in WORD lists (specifically 2003)?

Due to the increase in the number of characters of the number or their unequal width, it is not possible to set up tabulation in WORD with the same paragraph text indent from its number. Either this indent is almost absent, then it immediately increases in the next paragraph, most often with an increase in the digit of the number of the paragraph number, then vice versa.
With the settings in the "Change a multilevel list" window, the numbering tab setting for some reason reacts differently to the value being set. When entering in the "Position of the text in the box" zone, the tabulation after "is more than 5 or 6 mm, when the paragraph number is increased, it does not shift by the selected distance in the new position of the number number, but is pressed (reduced) to the number, which spoils the whole picture.
If you just use a space instead of a Tab character in the Symbol after number box, then in cross-references a space will not allow you to put a dot, comma, etc. immediately after the link number. And this is generally unacceptable.
