How to painlessly upgrade Ubuntu from 10.04 to 12.04?

Please tell me how can I painlessly upgrade ubuntu from version 10.04 to 12.04? The issue of "painlessness" worries, because:
1) The computer is running Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04, the Grub bootloader. In addition, there is a lot of information on the screw that you don’t want to lose, and throwing it off on blanks takes a long time, and this takes time. Those. Windows and partitions in NTFS do not want to kill in any case.
2) I work under Ubuntu, everything that is needed is set up for work (LAMP, IDE, etc.), at the moment there are a couple of working unfinished projects, and I would not like to set up a new workplace, because it is also a time cost.
In other words, how to upgrade to 12.04 without damaging anything?
Thanks in advance for your replies and advice.

Disable the PPA with ppa-purge, especially xorg-edgers and x-swat, remove unnecessary packages, I would even go over the list of ALL installed packages in Synaptic. The less installed, the less likely something will break. Perform the update in the standard update manager, I would leave it overnight - it can take up to 3 hours even on powerful machines.

Update with built-in OS tools. Information on the disks will not be lost, but some applications/services may need to be configured a little.

At first, I also wanted to update like that, but then I scored, bought an external screw for 1TB, merged the entire backup there, formatted the screw and installed 12.04. And setting up a working environment usually takes me no more than 1-1.5 hours. But now I know for sure that there is no garbage left. :)

The information and the bootloader will definitely survive. You can easily update.
During the update, by the way, LAMP will be reinstalled to the latest versions.

Good question - if I knew the answer to it, last weekend I wouldn't have to install the system from scratch :) During the installation, something hung and goodbye - the system stopped loading at all ...

Wait for August (12, in my opinion, 12.04.1 comes out). Ubuntu will prompt you to update itself. If you do not want to wait:
sudo do-release-upgrade -d
The -d switch is required, because officially update from LTS versions is not ready yet.

On my laptop, I just booted from the boot DVD of Ubuntu 12.04, one of the menu items was offered upgrade. There is one thing, but only Ubuntu 10.04 was on the laptop. You can try to boot from Ubuntu DVD without any risks, upgrade will be offered, so go ahead, no, then, as they wrote above, “sudo do-release-upgrade”.
