How to track changes in the directory?

There is a small site built on dokuwiki.
Once a day, a small bash script packs the contents of the site into an archive, thereby making a backup copy. How can you track that there have been some changes in the catalog over the past 24 hours, so that you can make a backup copy or not, depending on this?

If I'm not mistaken, DokuWiki is built on files and does not use a database, in one line you search for findfiles with a last modified date greater than the date of the last backup.

Isn't it easier to put a normal system to make backups - will it track itself?
