How to overcome virtual directory error when adding authentication in IIS?

Hello. I am developing a website using ASP.NET MVC. I got to the authentication of the site administrator, I decided to use the Forms authentication method. Made settings in Web.Config and got an error:

Description : An error occurred while processing the configuration file required to service this request. Review the following details for this error and modify the configuration file.
Parser error message: This error is using a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' outside of the application layer. This error can be caused by the fact that the virtual directory is not configured as an application in IIS.

I installed IIS, created a new application for DefaultWebsite, configured the name and physical path to the site being developed. In Visual Stduio, in the project properties, I specified the use of the local IIS server and entered the name of the application that I created. It did not help, the error remained. I seem to be missing something important. How to overcome it? Thanks in advance.
