How to organize work with a remote site?

The project is located on a remote server. Access is via SSH. In PhpStorm I am hooked to the project through sftp. Well, of course, synchronization takes a very long time. And if you switch between Git threads on the remote server, then again you have to synchronize the data for a long time. How can you optimize and speed up the work with a remote server in terms of development?
