How to organize storage for a home server?
Good day to all!
I decided to upgrade my servers, or rather put everything on 1, I plan to take a Supermicro 6025T and run virtual machines on it with the necessary roles in Hyper-V. It is planned to use a large disk space (For home archive storage; backups of various databases, VMs, agent data from a PC; a small file storage; application servers. All this will be spinning on VMs. It takes about 10 TB of space and will grow, + all this in RAID ). And when studying the issue of storage systems, I ran into a dead end.
And so, questions: is

SHD is a specific equipment, and quite expensive. You can't buy it for 25 thousand rubles :-) If you take a CU, then firstly, it will already be removed from support, and hence the slightest sneeze of equipment, and the whole system turns into a pumpkin. Secondly, you can’t stick any disks in the storage system. Only those that were produced specifically for this storage system. It is expensive, and most likely you will not find it for used systems. Ordinary arbitrary disks, even enterprise grade, will not work in storage systems.
Among all other considerations, think about where to put it and how to connect it. Because industrial storage systems are quite large, noisy and consume electricity in order.
So if you are not satisfied with the all-in-one system, and you definitely want to move storage to a separate piece of hardware, then there is only self-assembly and software solutions. FreeNAS, ESOS, manually build all the same on Linux or FreeBSD - depending on your skills. Well, plus to this - then it makes no sense to take a 2U chassis with 8 bays for LFF drives, it's better to take a 1U server. It will cost less, take up less space, eat less electricity. Although noisier, of course. Like this .
Literature - documentation on the relevant software systems. You can also look at Nexenta. She, like FreeNAS, also works on a freighter. Previously, the free community edition was, however, with a volume limit. Now I don’t know how things are going there, I haven’t been interested in it for a long time.
Sorry, but why do you need storage systems here? If you are laying on the server case and on the hyper. Put as many drives as you like into the case, make RAID10. If you need backups, take a shelf like Synology / QNAP.
SHD, as Artem and athacker rightly noted , is a brand, a support. This is necessary when there is a lot of the same type of iron. BU iron - it can turn out to be quite cumbersome - here we have an Intel blade basket - a working one, equipped with disks, 4 blades, two xeons each. A box at least 8U high, eating energy like a mining farm :)
