How to organize a home backup easier and more correctly?

3 years ago I made a "backup server" from an old laptop with two terabyte screws with arch on board. I used it for backup from a home PC, a laptop, two androids and a working PC. Everything was backed up in a semi-automatic mode. On computers, the necessary folders were copied over the network, synchronized from androids using the foldersync application. Without any schedule, when I remembered, then I did it. On average 3-4 times a month. The laptop was old and slow, Wi-Fi is also not fast (54 MB netgear). A year ago, liquid got on the “server” and it stopped working. The data is kept safe. And for the whole year I have been living without backups at my own peril and risk.
In this regard, I ask for advice from the community. What to use for backup server? Laptop, PC, NAS? You can specific models.
In addition, I want maximum automation so that backups are made in a timely manner according to the schedule. It will not be superfluous to use the server to access media files over the network (length or something like that).

A bunch of different solutions.
You can use the free Duplicati ( alternatives ), or you can buy Acronis True Image ( alternatives ).
Depends on tasks.
Where to backup (protocol) - is also decided differently. You can backup via sftp, samba, nfs, ftp - whichever is more convenient and best for you. Where to backup (destination) - depends on various factors. You can hook up an external hard drive to the router, you can assemble a home server, you can buy a NAS. All have their pros and cons and price ranges.
