How to optimize a Magento website?

I have a Magento website close to completion. However, when I host the site on my staging and production servers, it takes a long time to load (15-20 seconds). I have checked my servers and all my server side requirements seem to be ok. I feel like this is a configuration or code level issue and my developer isn't sure how to resolve this issue. I am hosted on non-cpanel servers. The servers don't have access to cpanel or ftp because the servers don't have those either. I'm using Bitbuckets Pipelines. I only have access to the database and storage in Bitbucket, and I can check and do things on the server according to your instructions. Please advise how to solve this problem with Magento website optimization.

@pcdesign

You need to enable caching in Magento.
Everything will load quickly.

1) as already said, caching
2) activate the slow query log in MySQL and look at it. And in general the database config
3) see which parts of the page are slow - https://www.webpagetest.org/ etc.
4) Are the servers close to you and potential users?
