How to open a directory in explorer from a browser?

Good afternoon, the

Customer wants that when clicking on the link, the explorer opens and there is a certain directory in it.

Ideas honestly, not much. It seems to be like the options that I looked at - starting from 2013 - it's impossible even in IE. Although before, as I understood, there was an opportunity through assetX.

The user story is this:
There are 500 employees in the corp network. There is a network drive. There is a corp. portal (web application in PHP). An employee enters the corporate portal, presses a button in the site interface, a network drive opens in Explorer.

This can be done with a plug-in for the browser (the smallest movement for the client is 1 click to agree to the installation).
Those. you write an extension that will add an api on opening the explorer, it is desirable to do such things with the control, for example, limit the website or require an apikey, etc.
There are a lot of ready-made extensions (google app launcher) can be used as an example code.

Directory on the user's computer? And if she is not?
In fact, you can open a local directory in the browser using file://, but this is not an explorer (which, by the way, is only on Windows, but there are much more platforms right now), and the path must be valid. But getting a valid path on the user's computer at the site level in the browser seems to be impossible for security reasons.
If all the same you didn’t tell something and you have your application on the user’s computer, then google Url sheme
