How to make the site work in the background?

Probably an overly stupid question but:
I created such a simple timer, as a parody, on eggtimer.com, a link to the timer , and it only works when I am directly on the site when I look at the site but stops when I go to other tabs . I uploaded it to azure. What is the problem.
