Is it possible to update gulp in a project?

Good day everyone, I got a project on gulp "gulp": "^3.9.1", but I have node -v12.18.0,
how can I get around this? maybe you can downgrade node js ?
I can’t start the project, it gives an error, ReferenceError: primordials is not defined
and when installing npm i
