How to make Skype work (at least for text) on a 56K connection?
I have quite a few contacts on Skype (ICQ is not popular here, few people have heard of Jabber either), with whom I sometimes need to exchange a few words. At the same time, I use a mobile 3G connection with a limit of 512 MB per month. The limit is quickly exhausted and the speed drops to dial-up 56K. You can live with this, but Skype, not to mention, can’t even connect. What's so hard about it? Can't it be configured somehow?
Skype 2.1.0.81. Linux Ubuntu 10.10. Provider Telefonica O2.

Maybe it's not about speed. Skype on my mobile phone connects and allows me to make calls via EDGE (not 3G).
For example, in some Megafon Internet packages, P2P is prohibited.
Could this be the problem?
For Skype (checked from the phone), a speed of 6 KB / s (48K) is enough.
There are skype <-> Jabber transports. More precisely, there is software for this, there are no public transports. But you will need this VDSka.
