for sliders use widgetkit . an excellent component for sliders, galleries, etc.
To have three columns on the main page - make a menu like "categories blog" for the main one - and in the settings of this menu item specify the parameters of the category blog view - three columns and number.
for the type of article/blog/list, the settings of the "menu item" have a higher priority - than the settings of the blog/article/list in the "article settings"

For multiple columns, the template must be laid out in at least three vertical positions. For output, you write a module and assign all three to the main one, each module and news.
