How to make friends airpods and linux?

I know that many Ubuntu users use airpods on their PC without any problems using a third party bluetooth adapter. I already have 3 adapters with aliexpress at home. All 3 are easily detected in blueman and are able to connect a smartphone to a PC. But the airpods won't pair with the adapter for some reason. Pairing hangs and fails. At the same time, on a working computer, I was once able to connect airpods, but then I removed the device for a second test and now I can’t pair either. The problem is definitely in the software on the PC. Both on the work and on the home computer OS Linux Mint. How can the problem be diagnosed?

I couldn't get Airpods to work on Mint 19.1 until I found one post where Airpods worked as headphones. We are not talking about using it as a headset with a microphone.
Steps:
Specify "ControllerMode = bredr" in /etc/bluetooth/main.conf
if you don't find ControllerMode , then add the line below:
ControllerMode = bredr
then
sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart
And connect.
