How to make a transparent area in an image fill with color?

There are images with transparent areas. The question is how to save this image as a jpg and still fill the transparent area with the desired color?
Found several solutions but none worked...

With PHP? Create a background of the desired color... - php.net/manual/ru/function.imagecolorallocate.php , if I understood you correctly (the whole library: php.net/manual/ru/ref.image.php)
