How to make a time machine for OS X on a remote server?

Essentially:
Buy a VPS, blunt, but with a big screw. Raise linux there, it has functionality for time machine backups.
If I raise openVPN to a server, then yes, it will work, I understand.
What if there are no tunnels?
And in principle, how viable is it?
